AI Portraits

AI Portraits transform your guests into superheroes, vintage oil paintings, 3D characters, and more, right from your photo booth. With over 170 premium AI styles, guests get a unique, shareable experience in about 10 seconds. No green screen or special equipment needed.

AI Portraits work on iPad, iPhone, Mac, and Windows PC.

How It Works

  1. Capture: Guest takes a photo at your booth

  2. Choose AI Style: Guest picks from your curated preset styles

  3. Transform & Share: AI generates the portrait in ~10 seconds. Guest can share via SMS, email, QR code, or print.

The AI processing happens in the cloud, so your booth needs a stable internet connection during the event.

Getting the Best AI Portrait Quality

The quality of AI portraits depends heavily on the input photo. Follow these guidelines to get the best results:

Lighting

Great lighting is the single most important factor. Photos must be well-lit and evenly exposed. Dim, underexposed, or harshly shadowed photos will produce poor AI results. Use ring lights, softboxes, or other continuous lighting to ensure faces are bright and clearly visible.

Face Size & Distance

Faces must fill most of the frame. Guests should stand close to the camera. If they're too far away and their faces are small in the image, the AI won't have enough detail to produce a quality transformation. Crop tight on the face and upper body for best results.

Number of People

Limit to 4 people per photo. AI Portraits can work with more than 4 people, but it is not recommended. As the number of faces increases, the AI has less detail per face to work with, and face similarity between subjects will degrade. For the best quality, 1-2 people is ideal.

Quick Checklist

  • Bright, even lighting on faces, with no dim or dark photos

  • Guests close to the camera, so faces are large in the frame

  • 1-4 people per photo (1-2 is best)

  • Avoid obstructions covering faces (sunglasses, masks, hats over eyes)

  • Stable internet connection for cloud processing

AI Portraits and Your Photo Layouts

The AI image is generated to match the photo area of the layout your guest picks, not what's written in the prompt. The app looks at the shape of the photo area in the selected layout and generates the image at the closest of these supported aspect ratios:

  • 1:1 (square)

  • 2:3 and 9:16 (portrait)

  • 3:2 and 16:9 (landscape)

If your photo area matches one of those ratios exactly (a full-bleed 4x6 portrait layout is 2:3, a 6x4 landscape is 3:2), the AI image fits perfectly with no cropping. This means you can freely mix portrait and landscape layouts in the same event. Each AI portrait is generated to fit the layout the guest chose.

Cropping only happens when the photo area is far from any supported ratio, like photo strips or panoramic shapes. In that case the image is generated at the closest supported ratio and then zoomed to fill the space, which trims the edges.

Tips:

  • Design portrait layouts with photo areas at 2:3 (or 9:16) and landscape layouts at 3:2 (or 16:9) for crop-free results.

  • Match your camera orientation to the photo area in the layout. The AI uses the captured photo as its starting point, so a portrait photo area gives the best results with a portrait capture and a landscape photo area with a landscape capture.

  • Don't describe a format or orientation in the prompt. The shape always comes from the layout, so keep the prompt focused on style.

  • When previewing presets with a test image in the Dashboard, use a test photo with the same orientation as the layout you're targeting. The preview follows your test photo's orientation, so a portrait test photo won't show how the same preset will be framed in a landscape layout.

  • Make sure your booth is running the latest version of the app, since layout-matched AI generation was added in a recent update.

Setting Up AI Portraits

AI Portraits are configured in the LumaBooth Dashboard under your event settings.

  1. Open your event in the Dashboard

  2. Navigate to AI Portraits in the event settings

  3. Toggle AI Portraits on

  4. Build your presets by combining a portrait style (e.g. Superhero, Renaissance) with an art style (e.g. Oil Painting, Comic Book)

  5. Use the test image feature to preview how your presets look before the event

Tip: Use at most 15 presets per event. Too many options can overwhelm guests and slow down the experience.

Available Styles

AI Portraits offers 170+ styles organized into categories:

  • Superheroes & Comics: Classic Golden Age, Dark Vigilante, Anime, Disney/Pixar 3D, and more

  • Movies & TV: Classic Hollywood, Film Noir, Spy/Secret Agent, Space Opera

  • Fantasy & Adventure: Dragon Rider, Steampunk Victorian, Cyberpunk City, Viking Explorers

  • Historical Eras: Ancient Egypt, Medieval Knights, Renaissance Italy, Roaring Twenties

  • Travel Destinations: Paris, New York, Venice, Hawaii, African Safari

  • Sports: Basketball, Soccer, Boxing, Olympics, Surfing, and more

Troubleshooting

  • "Insufficient AI credits": You've run out of credits. Purchase a credit pack or upgrade your monthly plan in the Dashboard.

  • Generation is slow or fails: Check your internet connection. AI processing requires a stable connection. Generations typically take 10-15 seconds.

  • Poor quality results: Review the quality guidelines above. Most quality issues come from dim lighting or faces that are too small in the frame.

  • AI image looks cropped in the final design: The photo area in your layout is far from a supported aspect ratio, or your app is out of date. See AI Portraits and Your Photo Layouts above.
